About the Project

Wandering the Weir is a collaborative, community driven art project centred on the experiences of canal users in Leamington Spa.

The aim of this project is to capture the history and memories of this section of the Grand Union Canal and look towards its future as an ever-changing site stretching across Leamington, connecting users from the town centre to the water, its wildlife and its stories.

Please read on below to find out more about the project and how you can get involved.

Telling the Towpath

Seeking Stories!

Telling the Towpath is a sound based artwork that you can be part of. If you walk along the canal, live nearby, live in a canalboat in or near Leamington, cycle along the canal or have a business  near the canal, this project is looking for you.

The canalside area in Leamington  is changing at a rapid rate, so if you or your business has or will be affected by development, I would really like to hear your voice.

The soundwalk will be available for free on the Echoes app and archived on this website. Transcriptions will also be made available.

If you have a story or something to share about the canal, I would love to hear from you. Please email me at wanderingtheweir@gmail.com to get in touch or sign up here.

During the October half term I'll be running a free family drop-in session aimed at children ages 7 - 16 and their families.

Go on a canal scavenger hunt, hear the sounds and stories of the towpath, discover some canal ghost stories, experiment with cyanotype printing and create your own collage artwork!

You can drop in anytime between 9am - 1pm, however materials will be used on a first come first served basis. If you would like to reserve your spot, please sign up here.

Workshop will take place at:

The SYDNI Centre, Sydenham, Leamington Spa CV31 1PT

31st October 2023

Drop-in: 9am - 1pm

Please note I am a fully DBS checked and experienced children's workshop leader. However, due to the open nature of the site and the self-guided aspect of the workshop, children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a supervising adult at all times.

Canal Co-Creation Workshop

Participants in the project, either Telling the Towpath or the Wandering the Weir workshops, are invited to a creative collaborative workshop. This workshop will look at ways we can create art together whilst reflecting on the themes and activities of the project.

It will provide the opportunity to share your voice with other participants and consider together how the story of the canal might change and what the future of the canal might look like.

Workshop will take place at:

The SYDNI Centre, Sydenham, Leamington Spa CV31 1PT
